Guwahati, June 26: In a significant address marking one month since he assumed the presidency of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gaurav Gogoi launched a fierce critique of the BJP-led government in Assam on Thursday.
Speaking to party members, Gogoi condemned the emergence of syndicate-controlled activities in Barak Valley, accusing the current administration of fostering an environment where crime and corruption thrive instead of promoting real development.
He expressed concern over what he termed a rampant syndicate raj, alleging that illegal networks managing the trade of stone, sand, and areca nut have taken over local economic activities, all while the government remains passive.
“In Barak, we see not development but a thriving syndicate nexus. These illegal operations, particularly those led by large truck lobbies, are not only exploiting resources but also harming vital infrastructure like bridges. This is not governance; it’s manipulation,” he stated.
Gogoi noted that while Congress has been proactive in assisting communities affected by landslides, there has been minimal support or initiative from the state government.
“Barak needs educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and effective flood management, not criminal enterprises shielded by political influence,” he emphasized.
He also voiced concerns regarding the alleged increasing suppression of journalism in Assam, accusing BJP officials of intimidating media owners and creating a hostile environment for critical reporting.
“Today, journalists face restrictions on social media. Submitting an RTI request has become perilous. Ministers are coercing media owners into silence. We are approaching a situation where the media, a cornerstone of democracy, is on the verge of collapse,” he cautioned.
On the topic of welfare programs, Gogoi pointed out systemic nepotism in the government’s distribution practices, claiming that benefits intended for the general populace are disproportionately awarded to relatives of ministers and MLAs.
“While village women receive merely Rs 1,200, the spouses of BJP leaders are benefiting from Rs 50 lakh under government schemes. This is grossly unfair. The Chief Minister clearly favors the affluent over the diligent middle class,” he remarked.
He further criticized the inclusion of ministers’ families in beneficiary lists, arguing that it undermines public trust and illustrates the misuse of state resources. “Even compliant GST-paying businessmen are overlooked, while cronies receive everything,” he added.
Gogoi also questioned ONGC’s recent decision to award a crucial pipeline repair contract in Sivasagar to a local firm with dubious credentials.
“Did SK Petro possess the necessary qualifications? Why was the contract awarded without proper evaluation? We demand clarity,” he insisted.
Addressing internal party reforms, Gogoi urged the Youth Congress to enhance women's representation at all levels, from blocks to districts.
“This should not be merely symbolic. Women must be empowered and given opportunities. I challenge the Youth Congress to genuinely increase women’s representation,” he stated.
To promote accountability, he introduced a “Monthly Report Card” system to monitor the performance of Youth Congress leaders.
“Those who serve the public selflessly will be recognized as ‘star performers’ and rewarded. Those who act out of self-interest will not be tolerated,” he declared.
Recognizing the hurdles facing Congress, Gogoi mentioned that the party’s immediate objective is to fortify its organizational structure across Assam before seeking alliances with other opposition groups.
In conclusion, Gogoi asserted, “Congress will advocate for every citizen—whether it’s about development in Barak, transparency in Sivasagar, or justice in BTR. No issue is too trivial. Together, we will restore public confidence in democratic governance.”
